aluminium conference| Nissan Motor Commits to Full Adoption of Low-Carbon Aluminium by 2030 to Significantly Cut CO2 Emissions

On May 17, 2024, in Yokohama, Japan, Nissan Motor Co. declared its intention to fully transition to low-carbon Aluminium by 2030. Starting from the second fiscal year of 2024, Nissan will incorporate parts crafted from green or recycled Aluminium in both new and existing vehicle models. This strategic move is aimed at replacing traditional Aluminium components, which comprise about 10% of a vehicle’s total weight, thereby substantially diminishing the company's carbon footprint.

The use of low-carbon Aluminium is a critical component of Nissan's broader environmental strategy, which targets achieving carbon neutrality throughout its entire product lifecycle by 2050. The Aluminium conference highlighted that green Aluminium, produced with electricity sourced from renewable energy, can cut production-related carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 50%. Moreover, utilizing recycled Aluminium can result in a reduction of up to 95% in carbon emissions.

Nissan has already started integrating automotive Aluminium panels produced by Kobe Steel Ltd. and UACJ Corporation in Japan, consisting of low-carbon materials. The company plans to expand the use of such sustainable materials globally, including in processed components, to further its emissions reduction goals.

From the 2024 fiscal year, Nissan is set to acquire various parts like hubs, chassis components, axles, and wiring harnesses made from green Aluminium for its existing models across key markets in Japan, the United States, and Europe. By the close of this fiscal year, around 20% of the newly mined Aluminium parts procured by Nissan in these regions will be substituted with green or recycled Aluminium. By fiscal year 2027, all new Nissan models will feature low-carbon Aluminium, marking a significant advancement in the company's commitment to sustainable development and its vision for a cleaner, safer, and more inclusive world.
