Aluminium Expo |Hydro and NKT Join Forces to Explore New Areas for Low-Carbon Aluminum Wire Application

According to Aluminium Expo, Hydro and NKT have established a strategic partnership to create a premier low-carbon aluminum power cable value chain, supporting the development of Europe's renewable energy grid. Over the next decade, leading up to 2030, the two companies will closely collaborate on research and development programs and product innovation. They aim to explore new areas for aluminum wire applications, significantly reducing the carbon footprint without compromising their well-known impeccable quality. These cutting-edge projects will span both primary and recycled aluminum resources, heralding a greener era for the future energy landscape.

Despite the rapid expansion of renewable energy, the pressing challenges of outdated and insufficient electrical grids pose a significant obstacle to the transition towards sustainable development. As efforts continue to limit global warming to a critical threshold of 1.8 degrees Celsius, recent studies by the independent research and commercial intelligence company Rystad Energy indicate that astonishing investments are necessary.

An estimated investment of $3.1 trillion into the electrical grid infrastructure before 2030 is deemed essential. This massive investment is crucial for strengthening the pillars of our energy system, paving the way for a greener, more sustainable future.

"Power cables play a vital role in transmitting and connecting renewable energy, and the power infrastructure sector has significant potential to increase aluminum usage. Our joint road map with NKT will pave the way for aluminum, thereby reducing the embedded carbon in Europe's electrical grid," said Eivind Krelik, Executive Vice President of Hydro Aluminium.

With cutting-edge technological expertise and precision manufacturing capabilities, Hydro is committed to exceptional product quality. Utilizing the world's most advanced and environmentally friendly aluminum production technology, Hydro sets benchmarks for climate impact and energy consumption efficiency.

According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), the global demand for new or upgraded electrical grids is expected to soar, necessitating the incredible addition or renovation of over 80 million kilometers. This figure is equivalent to the current total of the world's electrical grid infrastructure. Aluminum's excellent conductivity, flexibility, lightweight, and cost-effectiveness make it the best choice for driving the development of renewable energy grids.
