The Italian-based railway operator Ferrovie della Calabria (FdC) has signed an agreement with Swiss company Stadler for the additional purchase of three narrow-gauge hydrogen trains, with an option for up to 15 units. Notably, these trains signify Stadler's global pioneering in manufacturing narrow-gauge marvels utilizing hydrogen propulsion technology, leveraging lightweight aluminum structures to enhance energy efficiency. Stadler's innovative approach extends beyond revolutionizing rail transport with hydrogen energy; it encompasses a commitment to sustainability through incorporating aluminum into the train's body. The technical marvel of these narrow-gauge wonders lies in their rich aluminum composition, contributing to structural integrity and environmental responsibility.

The hydrogen-powered narrow-gauge trains designed by Stadler consist of two passenger cars and a power pack unit, all constructed with lightweight aluminum structures. The strategic use of aluminum ensures energy efficiency and aligns with the broader vision of creating sustainable rail transportation. Each train, spanning approximately 50 meters, accommodates 155 passengers with 89 seats and features a low-floor design, offering accessibility for all, including passengers with limited mobility, strollers, and bicycles.

Stadler has taken a pioneering role in developing and producing hydrogen-powered narrow-gauge trainsets, highlighting its contribution to decarbonizing Italy's railway transport. The aluminum body of these trains plays a crucial role in realizing this vision, providing a lightweight yet robust solution for sustainable transportation.
