aluminium profile exhibition | EGA launches UAE's largest aluminium recycling facility

Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) has commenced construction of the largest aluminum recycling plant in the United Arab Emirates, a significant development for the aluminum industry. The new plant, located adjacent to EGA's existing smelter, marks an important step in the country's efforts to enhance recycling capabilities and reduce carbon emissions.

The factory has an annual production capacity of 1.7 million tons and will specialize in processing post-consumer aluminum waste, such as old window frames, as well as pre-consumer aluminum waste generated from extrusion production. The recycled aluminum will be transformed into high-quality, low-carbon aluminum ingots, aligning with the global trend of increasing sustainable production practices. Currently, a significant portion of the UAE’s aluminum waste is exported for processing, causing significant economic losses to the national economy. The EGA recycling plant is expected to be completed within three years, making the UAE the largest consumer of aluminum waste. This initiative is expected to bring substantial economic benefits to the country.

Global demand for recycled aluminum is expected to surge, increasing from 27 million tons in 2022 to 57 million tons by 2040. This growth signifies a shift in the aluminum industry towards more sustainable and energy-efficient production methods. Compared to producing new metal, recycling aluminum reduces energy requirements by 95% and significantly cuts greenhouse gas emissions. The importance of recycling in the aluminum industry was emphasized by Abdulnasser Bin Kalban, CEO of Emirates Global Aluminium, in a press release.

EGA's commitment to sustainability is further demonstrated in their use of solar energy in aluminum production. The company is the first to start commercially producing aluminum using solar energy from 2021. EGA has expanded its low-carbon metal product range by combining solar energy with recycled aluminum, launching a low-carbon product named CelestiAL-R. BMW Group is the first customer for this innovative metal.

In line with the UAE's Net 2050 Strategy for the next 50 years, EGA has pledged to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. This commitment mirrors a broader global movement towards more environmentally responsible industrial practices.
